NEXUS or UltraNEXUS Unit Powers Down or Shuts Off

If your NEXUS or UltraNEXUS is powering off or shutting down on its own, requiring you to power it back up, here are some potential problems to check.

If the unit will stay on long enough, retrieve the events.log.

  1. The shutdown could be due to the unit overheating.
    1. Check the unit's events.log for any overheat log entries at the time of the shutdown. If it's shutting down due to overheating, the log should indicate why.
      1. If it's due to fans in the NEXUS failing, look for fan tach log entries. The MPEG fans may need to be replaced.
      2. If the motherboard is failing, look for CPU overheat log entries. Something on the motherboard or the motherboard itself is failing.
      3. The MPEG board may be failing if there are MPG0 or MPG1 overheat log entries. This may be due to the heatsink on the MPEG board may have come off and needs reattaching or it could mean the MPEG board is failing.
  2.  A failing power supply could be the cause of the shutting down.
    1. If there are no overheat log entries and the unit just powers off,  the power supply may be beginning to fail and needs to be replaced. Or it could be the power cord or power source is having intermittent issues.
