UltraNEXUS-HD Audio Distorted

The UltraNEXUS-HD audio seems distorted on one or both channels

Which audio output are you using?  The UltraNEXUS-HD supports balanced analog or SDI embedded.

Analog Audio

If analog, is it connected to a device that uses unbalanced audio?
  • The UltraNEXUS-HD analog audio is balanced (professional).  If the UltraNEXUS-HD balanced analog audio output is connected to a device that has unbalanced (consumer) inputs, you will need to install a balanced to unbalanced audio converter.

SDI Embedded Audio

If using the SDI embedded audio out, is it going to any kind of converter? Does the converter have an HDMI output that you could use to monitor the audio from?

Here are some tests to try:

  1. You should be able to locate one or more "Bars and Tone" video files in the storage of the UltraNEXUS-HD. Try playing one of them through the UltraNEXUS-HD, listening to see if the test tone is distorted.
  2. Place an active audio source on the UltraNEXUS-HD input to include active audio.
    1. Start a recording.
    2. After approximately 20-seconds, start playback of the recording file.
    3. How does it sound?  If it sounds good, check the source of the files that you feel are distorted.
  3. Remove the UltraNEXUS-HD from the signal chain to see if the problem is upstream.
    1. Disconnect the SDI cable going to the UltraNEXUS-HD’s SDI input, connecting the cable to a BNC barrel adapter.
    2. Disconnect the SDI cable going to the UltraNEXUS-HD's SDI output, connecting the cable to the other end of the BNC barrel adapter.  This will bypass the UltraNEXUS-HD and test all the cables and signals.
    3. Make sure the source signal is active.
    4. Is the audio still distorted?
      1. If so, the problem is most likely the video/audio source, a bad cable, a bad connection, or another device downstream from the UltraNEXUS-HD.
  4. Compare the sound of tests 1,  2, and 3.  Are they the same or different?
  5. Do a loop recording:
    1. Loop the SDI output of the UltraNEXUS-HD to its’ SDI input with a single SDI cable.
    2. Play one of the sample Bars and Tone files.
    3. Start a recording with the UltraNEXUS-HD using the Control Panel window.
    4. Wait for 30-seconds, then stop the recording.
    5. Transfer the recorded file and the Bars and Tone file you used for the test to your PC.
    6. Open the recorded file on your PC using VLC or another compatible player.
    7. Play the original Bars and tone file on the computer and compare the audio.
    8. If the two files sound the same, then the UltraNEXUS-HD is working correctly and you should check your cables, connections, or other devices upstream or downstream from the UltraNEXUS-HD.
