NEXUS/UltraNEXUS/E-HD2 USB Hard Drive Maintenance

Procedure for NEXUS/UltraNEXUS/E-HD2 USB Hard Drive Maintenance

This only applies to NEXUS, UltraNEXUS, UltraNEXUS-SDI, and E-HD2 servers.

If the NEXUS/UltraNEXUS events log is filled with "Error 1117 (I/O device error)" or "read" errors, this is an indication that the USB hard drive array is having issues.

Below you will find steps to try to get the USB hard drive array healthy again:

Disconnect the hard drive unit's USB cable from the back of the NEXUS/UltraNEXUS and plug it into a Windows computer's USB port.

Hard Drive Chkdsk Scan:

  1. On the PC, go to This PC or My Computer or Computer to see the list of hard drives connected to your PC. Windows should detect the USB drive and give the drive a drive letter. Note the drive letter.
  2. Press the Windows key + R on the keyboard. This will open the Run window.
  3. Within the Run dialog, type "cmd" and press Enter or click OK. You should now have a Windows command prompt visible on your screen (A black window).
  4. Type the drive letter of your USB drive followed by a colon (for example, "e:") and press Enter.
  5. At the new prompt for your USB drive, type "chkdsk /f" (space between "chkdsk" and "/f") and press Enter. Follow the on-screen prompts to finish checking the USB drive for errors.
  6. If asked to dismount the drive so it can run the scan, say yes – "y" and press enter.

If the scan finds any problems that cannot be fixed, the hard drive may need to be replaced.

Now check the drive for fragmentation.

    1. Unplug the USB drive from the NEXUS series system and connect the drive to a Windows PC.
    2. On the PC, go to My Computer or Computer to see the list of hard drives connected to your PC. Windows should detect the USB drive and give the drive a drive letter. Note the drive letter.
    3. Right-click the USB drive icon and select Properties – a properties window will open.
    4. Select the Tools tab in the Properties window.
    5. Click the Defragment Now button – this will open a Disk Defragmenter window.
    6. Click the Optimize Drive button.
    7. In the Disc Defragmenter window, select the USB drive, then click the Analyze button.
    8. It will run an analysis of the fragmentation of the drive.
    9. If it is fragmented more than 10% - it should be defragmented.
    10. To defragment, click the Defragment Disc button. Defragmenting can take a long time, so you may need to let it run overnight.
    11. When finished, Reconnect the USB drive to your NEXUS series system. You may have to reboot the NEXUS once the hard drive is reconnected.
