USB Hard Drive Requirements for NEXUS and UltraNEXUS

The format, size, and other required parameters for a USB drive for use with a NEXUS, UltraNEXUS, and UltraNEXUS-SDI server.

We do not support third-party drives; many will not work due to driver issues and USB 2.0 chip compatibility. The only way to test if a third-party drive will work is to plug it in and then reboot the NEXUS and see if it will recognize it.

That being said, certain recommendations give better success than others.

  • The drive has to be self-powered (not powered off of USB).
  • The drive CAN NOT have a power save mode that puts it to sleep (it should run 24/7).
  • The drive size must be 2TB or less for an UltraNEXUS or UltraNEXUS-SDI.
  • The drive size must be 1TB or less for a NEXUS.
  • The drive must support USB 2.0.
  • The drive must be formatted as a Single, Primary, FAT32 partition with a 32k cluster (allocation unit) size. (A Windows chkdsk scan will show cluster size).
  • In the root directory, create a MPEG folder.
  • Total storage on the UltraNEXUS or UltraNEXUS-SDI cannot exceed 4TB.
  • Total storage on the NEXUS cannot exceed 1TB.
  • RAID is fine as long as the USB only sees the single partition.
