WinLGX Crashes When Using Control Panel

If, when you open the Control Panel window of WinLGX, it locks up or closes, try the following steps to solve it.

There are usually two issues that can cause the Control Panel to lock up and close the WinLGX software:

  1. It's an older version of WinLGX.
  2. The WinLGX software is trying to use a 64-bit version of the VLC video player software.

Older WinLGX

Older versions of WinLGX were limited to a specific version of the VLC player that came with WinLGX. The latest version of WinLGX, version 7.0.3.48, does not have this limitation and can work with any 32-bit version of VLC.

You can check your version by going to the Help menu at the top of WinLGX and selecting About.

If you are not running version 7.0.3.48, you need to update WinLGX. You can download the latest version of WinLGX at https://www.leightronix.com/downloads.

64 Bit Version of VLC Player

The WinLGX software is 32-bit based software. It cannot work with the 64-bit version of VLC.

To check what version of VLC WinLGX is trying to use:

  1. In WinLGX, go to the Tools menu and select Preferences.
  2. In the Preferences window, select the Preview Monitor tab at the top.
  3. Look at the VLC Application Folder path listed at the bottom of that window.
    • It should display "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC" exactly. This is the path to the 32bit version of VLC.
    • If it displays "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC," that is the path to the 64-bit version of  VLC. Notice the absence of "(x86)".

Correcting the VLC Application Folder Path

To change the path:

  1. Click the browse button (the three-dot) button to the right of the path field.
    1. This will open a navigation window.
  2. Navigate to the location where the 32-bit VLC is located - here: "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC."
  3. Select the VLC folder and click OK.
  4. Then click OK in the Preferences window.
  5. Now exit out of WinLGX and then reopen WinLGX.

Missing 32-bit VLC

If there is no 32-bit version of VLC installed on the PC, you can find the 32-bit version of the VLC installer in the WinLGX 7 folder. Located on your PC  here: "C:\Program Files (x86)\WinLGX 7".

Make sure WinLGX is closed, then run that VLC.exe file to install the 32 bit VLC.

Now you can open WinLGX and reset the VLC Application Folder path in the Preference window as covered above.
